    To complete these notes on the discovery of the last ape, it has recently come to light that, ironically, the bonobo may have been known to science longer than any other great ape. The earliest accurate description of an ape was produced, in , by Nicolaas Tulp, a Dutch anatomist of great repute, immortalized in Rembrandt's The Anatomy Lesson.
